Ceramic Coating vs Wax: What Actually Protects Your Paint in SA's Climate
Wax and ceramic coating both leave a car looking glossy on the day it’s applied, but they hold up very differently once the vehicle is back out in Adelaide’s summer sun.
Wax: short-term shine
Traditional carnauba wax forms a sacrificial layer over the clear coat. It looks great, but under SA’s UV intensity it typically breaks down within 6–10 weeks, and faster still if the car is washed frequently or parked outside. It offers minimal resistance to bird droppings, tree sap, or red dust etching.
Ceramic coating: long-term protection
A properly applied ceramic coating chemically bonds to the clear coat rather than sitting on top of it. That bond is what gives it:
- UV resistance that doesn’t break down over a single summer
- Better resistance to chemical etching from bird droppings and sap
- A hydrophobic surface that sheds dust and makes future washes faster and safer for the paint
- Typical durability of 1–3+ years depending on the product tier and how the vehicle is maintained
Which one should you choose?
If you’re planning to sell the vehicle within a few months, a hand polish and wax is a cost-effective way to maximise shine for a sale. If you’re keeping the vehicle and want to reduce how often you’re paying for correction work down the track, ceramic coating pays for itself — particularly for vehicles that live outside rather than in a garage.
